General Information About the Residence Hall Staff

On the SUNY Plattsburgh campus there are 92 Resident Assistants and 12 Residence Directors. In the high rises there is one Resident Assistant (RA) per floor and in the low rises there is one RA per section. There is one Residence Director (RD) per building who oversees the operation of the building and supervises the RAs.

There is a special duty line for each building, and every night from 7 p.m.-7a.m. there is a RA on duty who does regular rounds of the building and is on-call in case of an emergency.

Resident Assistants

The RAs are generally undergraduate students and have gone through a lengthy selection and training process. The role of the RA is that of a liaison person serving as the link between the Student Affairs staff (as well as other administrative personnel) and the students. The RA's primary function is to act as a role model, offering peer assistance and direction to students.

Residence Directors

The RDs are graduate students who have also gone through a lengthy selection and training process. The role of the RD is that of a liaison between the Student Affairs Professional Staff, the RAs and resident students.  The RD serves as a behavior model offering assistance and direction to RAs and students. 

Overall, the Residence Hall Staff is there to help maintain a safe and secure environment where students are able to study and socialize. They create an atmosphere in the residence halls and on the campus in general that is conducive to self-direction, academic achievement, social and cultural maturity, and self-discipline.
