The Center for Teaching Excellence at SUNY Plattsburgh

Critical resources for a teaching community

The Center for Teaching Excellence at SUNY Plattsburgh is here to help faculty fulfill their aspirations to be among the best teachers in the SUNY system!
"The CTE promotes and supports strategies and activities that strengthen and enhance teaching effectiveness on behalf of students." (from The Mission statement approved in Fall 2004)

The Center's core programs and services include individual and unit consultations, class visits, workshops, and faculty learning communities. We also produce resources and guides to teaching principles and best practices, host a yearly conference, and publish a biannual peer-reviewed journal on teaching and learning. We look forward to working with all who teach and learn at SUNY Plattsburgh and to support an environment that values teaching and learning.

Class Visits

We invite SUNY Plattsburgh faculty to request a visit from CTE.

Happening now

Workshops are typically 75- 90 minutes long on topics concerning specific teaching techniques, including Moodle, course design, and more. The schedule of workshops will be updated periodically throughout the semester.

Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs) are small groups of faculty and staff who gather for discussion around particular topics. Often a single book will form the launchpad for discussion and provide a way to organize a cluster of questions and concepts, but the FLCs are not simply book groups. This year FLCs will run for a single semester, but may be extended to the entire year if there is sufficient interest. Faculty are welcome to join sessions as their schedules permit. See the FLCs for this semester.

Program Review

An internal Review Committee just published their 2015 report on the programming, services, and presence of the Center. The report includes recommendations for the Center going forward. Already the Center is implementing a number of the recommendations, and you can read more about programming changes and the Center Director's response here.

Confidentiality

At the CTE confidentiality is absolutely fundamental to the collaborative and supportive work that we do, and we take it very seriously. See here for the full confidentiality policy

The Common Good

The CTE publishes a journal on teaching and learning, The Common Good: A SUNY Plattsburgh Journal on Teaching and Learning. The call for papers is open, so please submit your abstracts.
