10th Annual 'Ride to Remember' Benefits Alzheimer's Disease Center, Third Age Centers

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (July 5, 2015) — The 10th annual motorcycle “Ride to Remember” held in honor of Barbara Tobin is set for Saturday, July 11. The event begins with 9 a.m. registration at American Legion Post 1619, 219 Rand Hill Road in Morrisonville.

The event is held rain or shine with all proceeds benefiting the Alzheimer’s Disease Assistance Center and the Third Age Adult Day Centers in Plattsburgh, Malone and Elizabethtown. Riders will leave Post 1619 at 10:30 a.m. and return around 1 p.m. where entertainment by Left Hand Black and Paid Company, food, raffles and an auction will begin about 1:30 p.m.

Feed the Bird Fundraising Campaign Exceeds Goals

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.  (July 1, 2015) — SUNY Plattsburgh’s Feed the Bird fundraising campaign, which ended June 30 at midnight with the close of the fiscal year, has received gifts from 4,108 alumni donors.

By surpassing its goal of 4,000, the campaign also secured a $50,000 gift from alumni Susan ’72 and David ’72 Zebro.

Girls Summer Basketball Camp Opens July 6

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.  (June 30, 2015) — The Cardinal Hoops Summer Basketball Camp for girls is slated to begin Monday, July 6 and run through the Friday, July 10.

Camp leaders include Cardinal women’s basketball Head Coach Cheryl Cole and Assistant Coach Ben Sarraf. Current members of the team will serve as instructors, with participants developing their skills and improving in the fundamentals of the game.

Operatic Tenor Rockwell Blake Conducts Annual Masterclass

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (June 23, 2015) — Internationally acclaimed operatic tenor Rockwell Blake returns to SUNY Plattsburgh Aug. 10-16 to lead an intensive voice masterclass for advanced singers and aspiring young professionals.

Blake, known for his roles in Rossini operas, was born in Plattsburgh and graduated from Peru Central School. He made his solo opera debut at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., as Lindoro in Rossini’s “L’italiana in Algeri” in 1976 and made his debut at the Met in New York City in 1981 in the same role opposite Marilyn Horne as Isabella. He retired about 10 years ago to his home on Cumberland Head in Plattsburgh and spends his time teaching opera in similar programs around the world.

Host Families Sought for Canadian Youth Ambassadors

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (June 16, 2015) — The Center for the Study of Canada is looking for local hosts for Canadian students and their teachers who will be on campus July 22-Aug. 3 participating in the annual Youth Ambassadors Program with Canada.

The center, in partnership with the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Embassy Ottawa and Fulbright Canada, will host 15 students and two adult educators — all of whom will represent the diversity of Canada by their geographic, socioeconomic, First Nations, first-generation and multigenerational status.

College Gearing Up for Reunion 2015

And for the fifth year in a row, the college is teaming up with the City of Plattsburgh and the Mayor’s Cup Regatta and Festival to embrace all Plattsburgh and the Adirondack Region has to offer in the summertime.

Alumni Volunteers Invited to Serve as Career Mentors

Alumni would provide career-based mentoring and information that allows students to connect without having to be in the same geographic location.

Workshop for School Inclusion of Students with Autism June 12

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (June 9, 2015) — A workshop on inclusion of children with autism in middle and high school will be held Friday, June 12 at SUNY Plattsburgh’s Angell College Center.

“Everybody Wins: Inclusion of Middle and High School Students with Autism and/or Intensive Support Needs” begins Friday morning at 8:30 with a presentation by Dr. Lisa Cushing on current research about the essential components, strategies and practices associated with instituting social and academic inclusion. Participants will be given a look at how one educator was successful in her work to include secondary school students with disabilities.

Phase I of Podium Renovation Expected to Begin This Month

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (June 5, 2015) —The elevated walkway that connects several buildings on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus will be undergoing extensive repairs that include a snow-melt system, green spaces and improved safety features.

According to Rick Larche, capital project manager, work on the walkway, also known as the podium, will begin at the end of June and include two phases. Phase I will begin at parking lot No. 8, the off-campus student lot on Draper Avenue, and cover the portions of the podium at Feinberg Library near the Rockwell Kent Gallery, Yokum Lecture Hall and Beaumont Hall.

SUNY Plattsburgh Opera Culture Coach Set to Board New Subscribers

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (June 2, 2015) — The SUNY Plattsburgh Department of Music is once again sponsoring the Montreal Opera Culture Coach program with subscription tickets available for the upcoming 2015-2016 opera season.

The Culture Coach program, now entering its 12th year, includes four Saturday night performances of operas by Puccini, Strauss, Verdi and Marc and transportation by charter bus, which leaves from Myers Fine Arts Building.
