Personal trainers are responsible for screening clients, evaluating their ability to take part in fitness programs and to individualize exercise programs to fit client goals. This minor covers nutrition, science of exercise, designing exercise programs, wellness/fitness, and C.P.R. /First Aid to prepare students who are interested in becoming certified personal trainers. The capstone experience is a two-credit 120-hour practicum under the supervision of a certified trainer.
The Fitness Center at SUNY Plattsburgh, as well as community health and fitness centers, employ many students with this academic background. This minor is an excellent addition for nutrition majors and/or students who are interested in the fitness industry.
There are many organizations that provide certifications. Every year, the Fitness Center sponsors a three-day Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (A.F.A.A.) certification workshop. The workshop ends with a practical and rhetorical based exam.
