WeComply Training at SUNY Plattsburgh

"SUNY Plattsburgh is committed to establishing a safe, respectful, and dynamic environment for our students and our faculty and staff.  This training program will help us achieve this goal and comply with federal, state, and SUNY requirements for training.  Thank you for your time and effort in this endeavor." — John Ettling, President

FAQs

What is this all about?

As President Ettling says, this training will help us keep ourselves and our students safe and effective, and in compliance with various laws.  These laws include:

  • Title IX (enforced by the US Department of Education)
  • Title VII (enforced by the US Department of Labor)
  • Right to Know (enforced by US OSHA)
  • Clery Act (enforced by US Department of Education)
  • Internal Control Act (NYS requirement)
  • Various NY State laws and SUNY policies

So, the training is useful to the college and its programs — and we must do it.

This on-line program makes it easy for employees to complete the training without having to attend a formal training meeting.

You won’t have to do all of these all at once!  They’ll be phased in; see schedule below.

Why me?

All employees must receive training.  Not all training modules are required for all employees, but some of the topics are required for all of us.  You will have a very specific list of modules just for your position.

How long will this take?

Most modules will take between 10 and 25 minutes.  Some supervisor modules may run a bit longer.  These modules will be phased in over time; you don’t have to do them all at once.

Can I do this on work time?

Yes, of course.  These trainings are a part of your work assignment.  There will be a deadline date, but there will be plenty of time and leeway built in.  If you start a module and are interrupted, no problem.  You can come back to it later.  You can schedule this work around your other duties.

What if I don’t have a computer at my work place?

No problem.  For those employees who don’t have a computer at work, or for those who are less used to using computers, there will be group sessions in a computer lab with our training coordinator there to help you.

If I have had training on these same topics at my other job, can I get credit for that or do I still have to take this training?

Our modules are specific to SUNY Plattsburgh policies so you do need to take our training.  And, we all need to have refresheres every now and again.  It's good training practice and it's the law in many cases.

Who is Stacey Basford?

She is our training coordinator.  She is located at SUNY Canton, but will be a frequent visitor to our campus here in Plattsburgh.

SUNY campuses at Canton, Potsdam, and Plattsburgh are working together on this important task.  We are sharing services here, making this process more efficient.  Ms. Basford has already implemented this process at Canton and Potsdam, so all the bugs are already worked out.  We’re lucky to get in on this!

All emails asking you to complete a training module will come from Stacey Basford. You can also ask her questions at basfordsl@canton.edu or call her at (315) 386-7048.

You may also contact SUNY Plattsburgh’s Human Resource Services at (518) 564-5062.

What is “WeComply”?

This is a company that has put together various training programs in on-line modules.  We didn’t have to reinvent the wheel here, though all modules are customized to SUNY Plattsburgh.  Experts on our own campus have carefully reviewed the trainings.

When is all this going to happen?

There are a number of required trainings, but we won’t make anyone go through training overload.  We will phase in the modules beginning in January of 2014.

Beginning in March:

  • Title IX (covering sexual harassment, sexual violence)
  • Workplace Violence (how to prevent it; what to do if it happens)
  • Clery Act requirements (for a specified group of employees only)

After March, we will phase in other trainings, including:

  • Right to Know (workplace safety and health)
  • Internal Controls
  • Cyber Security
  • FERPA (privacy rules)
  • And more….

After the first year, when we are catching up on requirements, we will have more flexibility and will spread the trainings out to be required every two or three years.  Your patience is requested as we meet these mandates.
