SUNY Plattsburgh Music Department to Present Choral Concert

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Nov. 8, 2013) — Directed by Jo Ellen Miano, two choral ensembles from the SUNY Plattsburgh Department of Music, will present an evening of choral works 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, in the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall.
With faculty member Dr. Karen Becker and alumna Dr. Jun Matsuo at the piano, the combined choirs of the ;Cardinal Singers and College Chorale will sing Brahms’ “Liebeslieder Walzer” (“Lovesong Waltzes”), op. 52 — a collection of 18 short waltzes for chorus and four-hand piano. ;
Student Art Auction to Raise Scholarship Funds

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Nov. 6, 2013) — Student artists at SUNY Plattsburgh have donated their work to an art auction designed to raise money for student art scholarships Thursday, Nov. 21, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Myers Fine Arts Building lobby.
The annual silent auction gives students the chance to experience what it’s like to have their art purchased by the public while raising money for the education of fellow students.
'Entertainer of the Year,' the Gibson Brothers, to Perform

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Oct. 31, 2013) — The award-winning Gibson Brothers will return to their alma mater, 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 16.
The band’s concert in SUNY Plattsburgh’s E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall, is a fundraiser for Bluegrass for the Next Generation — an effort to promote the genre at the college and in the community, through classes, scholarships, concerts, jam sessions and a show on SUNY Plattsburgh’s WARP radio station.
Named “Entertainer of the Year” for the second straight year by the International Bluegrass Music Association, the Gibson Brothers band has received many other accolades, such as having one of their songs, “They Called It Music,” reach No. 1 on the Bluegrass Today Weekly Airplay Chart for April 12 and May 17.
Cardinal Points Newspaper Garners Associated Collegiate Press Accolade

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Oct. 31, 2013) — Cardinal Points, SUNY Plattsburgh’s student-run newspaper, was named to the Associated Collegiate Press’s Best of Show list at the National Collegiate Media Association convention in New Orleans, Oct. 23-27.
The paper came in at No. 8 in the four-year weekly tabloid division. Other papers named in that division included those from the University of North Florida, University of Miami, Georgia State University and California State University, Stanislaus.
SUNY Plattsburgh College Council Meeting to Feature Report on Global Education

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Oct. 29, 2013) — The SUNY Plattsburgh College Council will hold its next meeting at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, in the Alumni Conference Room of the Angell College Center.
The meeting will feature a presentation on the Global Education Office by Cody McCabe, associate director for international enrollment services.
College's Model United Nations Club Wins Best Large Delegation Award

ITHCA, N.Y. (Oct. 29, 2013) — SUNY Plattsburgh’s Model United Nations club received the Best Large Delegation award in the fourth annual Cornell International Affairs Conference at Cornell University, Sunday, Oct. 20.
The club sent a team of 12 delegates to the conference. Ben Rosner and Kevin Clayton both received Best Delegate honors — the highest individual awards given. Meanwhile, Shaun Reardon received an “Honorable Mention.”
More than 65 delegates from eight schools, including McGill University, Pennsylvania State University and Queens University, attended the conference.
SUNY Plattsburgh Lecturer Selected for Kent State Award

KENT, OHIO (Oct. 29, 2013) — Kent State’s College of Education, Health and Human Services recently honored a SUNY Plattsburgh lecturer with the 2013 Recent Alumni Hall of Fame Award.
Andrea Simms is a 2008 graduate of Kent State’s master’s in special education program and a current Ph.D. candidate at the university. She has worked in the field of education for 13 years, spending much of that time in the Bahamas as a generalist teacher, an intervention specialist and a professional development consultant. Simms is now a lecturer in SUNY Plattsburgh’s teacher education program.
SUNY Plattsburgh to Host Emergency Drill

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Oct. 24) -- SUNY Plattsburgh will conduct a full-scale emergency training exercise in Beaumont Hall, from 8 a.m. to noon, Friday, Oct. 25.
While officials are trying to keep interruptions to a minimum, those working and taking classes in Beaumont Hall should expect that there will be some.
'The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee' Comes to SUNY Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (October 17, 2013) — SUNY Plattsburgh’s music and theater departments will present “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” Nov.7-10, in the Hartman Theatre, Myers Fine Arts Building.
The play, which won a number of Tony Awards including best book (musical), best musical and best score during its 2005 Broadway run, focuses on some unlikely heroes: a quirky cast of six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves. They compete to win the spelling championship of a lifetime and together learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser.
The New York Times has called the show "irresistible, riotously funny and remarkably ingenious …"
Karen Becker and Friends Concert to Feature Violinist Jonathan Storer from University of Trinidad and Tobago

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2013) — Violinist Jonathan Storer from University of Trinidad and Tobago will perform with pianist Dr. Karen Becker at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 26, in E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall.
The program will feature music by Franck, Beethoven and de Falla. This concert is part of the Karen Becker and Friends series sponsored by the SUNY Plattsburgh Department of Music. Admission is free.
