Summer Safari Program at SUNY Plattsburgh Celebrates 27 Years

03:37pm EDT, 13 Jun 2014

PLATTSBURGH, NY (June 13, 2014) — A program that began with just a few science courses for kids now includes cultural enrichment for ages 5-16 in a variety of subjects from novel writing to digital photography.

Summer Safari celebrates its 27th year with many new classes, like “The Creepy Crawly Lives of Bugs,” “Cartoon Basics” and “Adventures in the Museum.” Returning favorites include “Science with the Magic School Bus,” “Minecraft 101” and the theater camp production, “Fun on 42nd Street.”

Classes, which run from 1 to 3 weeks, each begin July 8 and run through Aug. 8. There are both morning and afternoon options.

Summer Safari draws more than 200 participants each year, from local youth to visitors from across the U.S. Many students return annually and plan their summers around the program.

There is a reason Safari has built such a following, according to program director Kate Chilton, who has been watching the program grow since its creation. “Summer Safari allows kids to delve into interests that they don’t have time to explore during the regular school year. They meet peers who are interested in the same kinds of things. They can truly be themselves.”

The popularity of the program can also be attributed to the diversity of instructors, many of whom are teachers in local public schools.

“I encourage new instructors to come on board and create new proposals,” Chilton said, adding that she is always amazed at their creativity.
