Apply for Admission (International Students)

Overview

Email is the primary method of communication between the Global Education Office and international applicants. Please provide a valid email address on the completed application in order to receive timely reminders and updates. Sometimes, we need to call you regarding your application. Please provide us with a working phone number on your application. It is very important we have your number so we can assist you with your application in a timely and efficient manner.

All the documents must be original or copies certified by the source institution (i.e., high school, examination council, etc.) or the EducationUSA advising center sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

A permanent address outside the United States is required of all applicants.

There is an application fee of $50.00 USD that cannot be waived under any circumstances.

How To Apply

Step 1: Complete and Sign International Application Forms

Admission Application

You may use SUNY Plattsburgh's international application or the Common Application to apply for admission. Both are viewed equally by the Admissions Committee.

Step 2: Send Academic Records

• Original or certified copies of academic transcripts, mark sheets, grade reports, diplomas or certificates, national standardized examination results, or other academic course work are required. Photocopied or scanned copies are NOT acceptable as official documents.
• Include a certified English translation for all documents not written in English. If you need assistance translating your documents into English, we recommend using the American Translators Association to find a certified translator.
• Transcripts submitted for admission become the property of SUNY Plattsburgh and cannot be returned to you or sent to another college or university.

Step 3: Provide Evidence of English Language Proficiency

All international applicants are required to submit proof of English Proficiency. The most common way of demonstrating proficiency is through standardized exams such as the TOEFL Internet-based (iBT), IELTS, SAT, or ACT. Students who have taken these exams should request that an official score report be sent from College Board/ETS or the British Council.

Other acceptable ways of demonstrating English proficiency are the following:

• STEP/EIKEN results
• Ordinary-level examination results
• West African Education Council examination results
• Caribbean Examination Council examination results
• Certificate of completion of ELS Language Center program with a level of 112

A TOEFL score of 540 (paper-based) or 76 (internet-based) or higher will enable you to be considered for admission directly into university-level academic programs. A TOEFL score between 450 and 539 paper-based (or between 45 and 75 computer-based) would enable you to enroll in our English Bridge Program.

Students who choose a program of study within the division of Education, Health, and Human Services must meet the minimum criteria for full-time admission directly into university-level academic programs.  For a complete list of these majors please visit their department website.

Step 4: Provide Financial Guarantee

• In compliance with United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) regulations, all international applicants must provide evidence of sufficient funds available for their studies. We require a current bank statement (dated within the past six months) on bank letterhead, with the name of the account holder and currency clearly indicated in English. An Affidavit of Support cannot be used in place of a bank statement. If you need assistance translating your documents into English, we recommend using the American Translators Association to find a certified translator.
• If the family name (surname) of the account holder on the financial statement is different from your own, you will need to provide a letter written in English from that individual stating his or her relationship to you and intention to financially support your education.

International Transfer Students

Any international applicant who has completed academic studies at another college or university may be considered for transfer admission to SUNY Plattsburgh. The minimum standards for admission as a transfer student are:

• Completion of at least one year of full-time study
• Academic achievement equivalent to 2.5 on a 4.0 scale

Students with less than one year of full-time study will be considered for admission based on a review of their college/university transcript(s), as well as secondary school records.

Transfer students from within U.S. must also send:

• Copy of your I-94 and current I-20
• Copy of your passport photo page and visa page
• Transfer Form completed by the immigration advisor at your current school
