Adolescence Education Program at SUNY Plattsburgh

Photo of a student teacher working in a middle school with adelescent age students Teachers for grades 7-12 face special challenges in preparing adolescents for life in the 21st century.

SUNY Plattsburgh offers focused adolescence education programs in biology, chemistry, earth science, English, French, mathematics, physics, social studies, and Spanish. Teacher education candidates in these areas benefit from the guidance of two advisors — one in the adolescence education department and one in their liberal arts concentration.

Candidates in the combined bachelor’s and master’s degree program complete a content-area major in one of the above disciplines and then a 42-credit program of education courses in preparation for teacher certification.

A master of science for teachers program is also available for those who have already earned a bachelor's degree in one of those content areas. This degree program also leads to initial teacher certification.

Adolescence Education Mission Statement

Our mission, guided by the mission of the Education Unit, is to educate teacher candidates with the specialized knowledge, skills and dispositions essential to meeting the educational needs of adolescents in a dynamic world. A key part of that education is the cultivated understanding of the interrelationship between academic content, pedagogical application, continued learning, and the moral and political considerations of working with adolescents. The adolescence education program aspires to prepare teachers who are competent, confident and professionally dedicated to the public educational mission.
