Art Therapy Program at SUNY Plattsburgh

Merging Visual Art and Psychology with Helping People

The art therapy minor at SUNY Plattsburgh offers students in art or psychology the competitive edge for acceptance in a master's level graduate program in art therapy.

Through a sequence of two specially developed courses, Introduction to Art Therapy and Art Therapy Practicum, you can gain the knowledge and hands-on experience graduate schools are looking for.

The art therapy minor is open to all students.

The courses for art students have a psychology emphasis (Art Therapy Minor for Art Majors and Art: Studio Minors); courses for students studying psychology have an art emphasis (Art Therapy Minor for Psychology Majors or Minors). This minor is also a great complement to many other majors and minors.

Students are encouraged to speak to the art therapy minor coordinators Rick Mikkelson (art), or Michael Morales (psychology) to guide course selection based on their current or intended curriculum.

Programs of Study

Anticipated Course Sequence

Introduction to Art Therapy (PSY326/ART325) is the prerequisite course for Art Therapy Practicum (PSY327). Students who are interested in declaring a minor in art therapy need to be mindful of when these courses are offered, as they follow a specific rotation. It is strongly recommended that students declare the minor no later than the first semester of the junior year in order to ensure availability of the two courses before graduation.

The course rotation through spring 2013 for the two key courses in the art therapy minor is as follows:

Projected Course Sequence for 2011-2013

Year Semester Course
2011 Fall Art Therapy Practicum (PSY327)
2012 Spring Introduction to Art Therapy (ART325/PSY326)
2012 Fall Introduction to Art Therapy (ART325/PSY326)
2013 Spring Art Therapy Practicum (PSY327)

Though every attempt will be made to offer the courses in the above rotation, these are only projected course offerings and cannot be guaranteed.
