Welcome to Academic Advising at SUNY Plattsburgh

Is This You?

  • A new Plattsburgh student
  • An Undeclared student
  • Changing majors/minors or in an academic "re-direction"
  • In academic jeopardy or difficulty
  • Unclear about an academic policy or degree requirement
  • Want to earn college credit by taking a CLEP test
  • Troubled with a question and don't know who else to ask!

That's Why We're Here!

The Academic Advising Office is here to help you achieve academic and personal success, stay on track with your degree requirements, and keep you well informed of academic policies that apply to you.

We're busy all year - orienting new students to our academic system, ensuring that each student has a designated advisor, advising undeclared and transitional majors, helping students on academic probation, and answering all students' questions about the progress they are making toward an undergraduate degree.

The Academic Advising Office Can Help You in Many Ways

Students visit our office for a wide variety of reasons. Here are just a few:

  • Information. Along with your own academic advisor, we can explain General Education requirements, academic policies, how to view/interpret your Degree Works audit, how to search for classes, how our advising system works, and when course advisement occurs.
  • Course Advisement. Our office is the academic home for Undeclared majors. Professional advisors assist undeclared students with course selection, registration, and major exploration. If you have a major, but need extra help, we'll point you in the right direction!
  • Declaring a Major. Using a simple form from our office, students may change their major, add a second major, or add/delete a minor. We'll show you what you need to complete and direct you to the appropriate people from whom you need a signature or approval.
  • Academic Difficulty. Each semester, our office coordinates the academic progress review to ensure students meet the 2.0 GPA standard and are making satisfactory progress toward a degree. We assist students who are on academic probation and those questioning a course or college withdrawal.
  • Referrals to Services. Sometimes you need help with a matters connected to your academic life - such as studying abroad, exploring careers, seeking psychological counseling, documenting a learning disability. Our office partners with, and will refer you to, the experts who coordinate these services.
