Women's Rugby Sports Club and the Club's Operating Guidelines
Funded by Student Association, the Women's Rugby Club at SUNY Plattsburgh club is a member of the Empire Rugby Football Union Geographical Union (Empire GU) and play in the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) upstate conference of the Empire GU. During the fall, they participate in Conference league games. The spring schedule consists of either scrimmages or tournaments.
There have been numerous changes for the SUNY Plattsburgh D3 Women's Rugby program this past year.
In the fall of 2013, Coach John Bradley, ’85, long time mentor and coach of Plattsburgh Women's Rugby decided to step down after his years of work developing the program, both on the field coaching, and off the field maintaining schedules, web sites, and as a board member of the Empire GU Conference. JB works for SUNY Plattsburgh in a new role, but still comes out to the games. He will be greatly missed.
The Empire Rugby Football Union (Empire GU) then made the decision to drop the upstate New York college rugby programs from their conference, leaving all the SUNY schools with nowhere to officially play for fall 2014.
Tom Pillsworth, a long time rugby player for the Saranac Lake Mountaineers and D1 player for the Albany Knicks, took over as the new coach. Tom followed in JB’s footsteps, with both on and off field roles, helping to establish a new conference for the Plattsburgh women's team to play in.
The Upstate New York Collegiate Conference Rugby (NYCCRUGBY) was established and approved by USA Rugby in July of 2014.
The new conference represents over 20 women's rugby teams, mostly SUNY schools, as well as two D1 Teams, Syracuse and University of Buffalo.
The fall 2013 season for the women's rugby team went 3-1 in conference play leading them to the division semi finals. In the semi final game against Geneseo, freshman Raeanna Levenson scored in the final seconds of the match, giving Plattsburgh a 20-19 win and a trip to the division finals against Rochester. The team played a good game but lost to Rochester.
During the fall, Plattsburgh men's and women's teams also hosted a friendly 10's tournament to include the women's club from the Saranac Lake Mountaineers. In the spring, the team played scrimmages against Union and Middlebury. They also participated in the Blue Balls Tournament in Fort Drum, NY and hosted the annual TNT Rugby Tournament.
