Literacy Education at SUNY Plattsburgh

"If you can read this, thank a teacher."

Remember that bumper sticker? Our job in literacy education at SUNY Plattsburgh is to prepare teachers with the skills and strategies they need in order to help learners of all ages to read, write, and use all of the language arts effectively.

We offer courses to help undergraduate education majors incorporate literacy instruction into their teaching at the elementary, middle, or secondary level.

Our M.S.Ed Literacy graduate program is available for certified teachers who wish to gain expertise and certification in literacy for birth to grade 6 or for grades 5 through 12.

In addition, our Literacy Education Center, located in Sibley Hall, Room 332, provides teacher-candidates with award winning books, literacy games, and other resources for use not only in their college classes, but also in their work with children in clinically rich experiences. Our M.S.Ed. Literacy graduate students use the LEC for tutoring experiences with children.

About Literacy Education

Regardless of their particular ages, learners are always in the process of developing their abilities to use the language arts — the arts of "reading, writing, listening, and speaking" along with the recent addition of "viewing and representing visually." Due to this, every teacher is, in effect, a literacy educator. Across all subject areas and grade levels, teachers help students use skills and strategies to make sense of the world.

Through our writing program (in which teacher candidates explore educational issues while honing their own writing abilities), our undergraduate courses, and our specialized graduate courses, literacy education faculty members seek to prepare teachers for the challenges of the new century.
